The early survival of the alternating current, despite its advantages was far from guaranteed. It was severely limited in its use by the perceived uses of electricity at the time and faced fierce competition from it predecessor, direct current. Over coming direct current would not be easy and would not happen over night, as it was being backed by one of the wealthiest , most famous, most powerful, and most influential inventors in American History: Thomas Edison.
